Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation; [se’lena kinta’nija ‘peres] April 16, 1971 - March 31 1995), was an American Tejano singer. The "Queen Tejano music", her contribution to music and fashion helped make her one of the most popular Mexican-American entertainers of all time. In the year 2020, Billboard magazine put her in the third spot on their list of "Greatest Latino artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums as well as the Latin charts of songs. In her selection of clothes the media referred to her as the Tejano Madonna. Her choices in clothing are what brought her the nickname "Tejano Madonna" by various media outlets. Her reputation was frequently discredited in the 1980s and refused bookings at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, which is a largely male-dominated genre. Her debut album was self-titled and released the following year. Her brother was her principal music producer and the songwriter. One of its singles, "Como la Flor", became one of her most popular famous songs. Live! (1993) was nominated as the best Mexican/American album at 1994 Grammy Awards. It was the first Tejano album to be awarded this award. In 1994, she released Amor Prohibido, which became one of the most popular Latin albums sold in the United States. It was also credited with launching Tejano music's first commercial phase. It was one of Latin music's most well-known subgenres.
